Apple applies for facial recognition patent, wants to let iDevices get to know you better

Your momma always said your handsome mug would take you places. Now it might allow you to access your iPad. An Apple patent application released today describes a facial recognition system that requires minimal computing power, and works whether you're indoors or out -- we don't use our tablets and phones in a photo booth, after all. The technology works by comparing a current image of your mug to a reference model user profile made using "high information" portions of the human face, like eyes and mouths. Translation: it'll take a picture, compare it against the pictures associated with various user accounts on the device and decide if the two images are similar enough to grant you access. Because this is just an application, it's safe to say we won't be seeing this kind of facial recognition in iOS anytime soon, but let's hope it works better than the ICS version if it does.

Update: An important thing to note is that Apple applied for this patent long before Android's Face Unlock debuted a few months back. The paperwork was first submitted on June 29th, 2010 -- it's just now being disclosed to the public.

Microsoft eyeing cloud backup service for its phones

Microsoft aims to help Windows Phone owners safely store their personal data on its servers as part of a future service.
Windows Phones
An software engineering job listing picked up by WMPoweruser seeks someone to join its "Windows Phone Backup, Migrate, and Restore team."
"Our goal is to ensure that no matter if someone loses their phone, drops their phone in a lake, buys a new windows phone, or just has their toddler wipe their phone by entering the wrong PIN over and over, a user can quickly and seamlessly get their phone back to a good state," the listing reads.
In the posting Microsoft notes that those aforementioned features are for "the next version of Windows Phone," which puts into question whether the feature will be available for current Windows Phone owners.
As it stands, Microsoft's current back-up solution for its phones is tied to its Zune software, meaning users must go back to their home computer to get a back-up. Competitors like Apple and Google have moved farther away from this, offering cloud-based backup services for their mobile operating systems.
In Google's case, the phone will re-download apps, app data and settings when a user logs in with their Google account on a new phone. Android users are also able to install third-party applications that can make a copy of the their phone and send it to an authorized cloud storage service. For Apple its solution is the recently-introduced iCloud backup, which stores user media, messages, ringtones, apps and app data on Apple's servers, and can re-load that data onto an authorized iOS device
The job posting offers yet another peek at Microsoft's plans for the Windows Phone platform. A purported leaked roadmap, which made it into the wild yesterday suggests that the next major software release from Redmond is coming in the second half of 2012, and will bring dual-core devices, additional business features and support for higher resolution screens.

AT&T Buys Qualcomm’s 700MHz Spectrum For $1.9 Billion – FCC Approves

With AT&T’s proposed T-Mobile merger dead in the water, it seems the company is looking towards new, less FCC offensive ways to spend their money. Enter Qualcomm who has just sold off their 700MHz spectrum to AT&T for use in its budding 4G LTE network. The deal has actually been approved in a 3-1 vote by the FCC but it doesn’t come without some fine print. First, AT&T will have to make sure they meet current interference requirements and second, they will have to share some of this newly acquired spectrum with some of their competitors for data roaming.
The spectrum was originally used by Qualcomm for their Flo TV service but was short lived. No sense in letting all that good spectrum go to waste now, is there? The agreement should go into effect by the end of this year. AT&T’s full press release can be found below.
AT&T* announced today that it has received all required regulatory approvals for AT&T’s acquisition of spectrum from Qualcomm. AT&T is purchasing 700 MHz spectrum licenses covering more than 300 million people for approximately $1.9 billion.
“This spectrum will help AT&T continue to deliver a world-class mobile broadband experience to our customers,” said Bob Quinn, senior vice president-Federal Regulatory, AT&T. “We appreciate the FCC Chairman, the Commissioners and their staff for completing its review before the holidays.
“As spectrum is the lifeblood of the U.S. wireless industry, we are pleased that the FCC did not reduce the spectrum screen, however, we continue to believe any changes to the process by which it is allocated should be subject to open and transparent public discussion and clear to everyone with an interest in ensuring the health of our industry.”
The companies expect to close the transaction in the coming days.

Round Two of T-Mobile’s Smartphone Battle See the Galaxy S II Take on the iPhone 4S

Last week we saw T-Mobile’s HTC Amaze 4G put a serious hurting on the iPhone 4S, but it seems that wasn’t enough to quiet the Apple fanboy down at the arcade. He must be a glutton for punishment to challenge the Samsung Galaxy S II after taking an 8MP camera smackdown. Who will win this round? Here’s a hint: it’s the dual-core phone on T-Mobile’s 4G HSPA+ network. Is this week’s entry into the smartphone battle even better than the first? Decide for yourself by checking out the video above.

Nexus S is first to run latest Google Android software

Google’s Nexus S combines Samsung’s slick hardware with Android’s endless features. Photo/FILE

The Nexus S has popped out of the oven stuffed with freshly baked Gingerbread -- it’s the first phone to run the latest version of Google’s Android software. It combines Samsung’s slick hardware with Android 2.3’s seemingly endless features, and the result is a confection that’s worth nibbling.
But don’t expect massive changes compared to Android 2.2 Froyo or the Samsung Galaxy S’ hardware. The Nexus S is a subtly refined dessert, rather than a gastronomic innovation.
The Nexus S is Google’s latest flagship phone, following in the footsteps of the T-Mobile G1 and GoogleNexus One.The ‘S’ in its name signifies its Samsung origins -- and that’s a company that knows how to make some very sexy hardware.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II gets a software update of its own

Can someone that works for T-Mobile confirm this?  What if that representative didn't know what he/she is talking about (like the one at the store)... forgot to mention ... went back to that store a few days later... and talked to a different person there and he told me that it actually uses your minutes when WiFi calling....
I care because I am on a 1000 min. plan... and also if it is actually true, that you can call anywhere in the WORLD... that means I could call other countries free, and I'd take advantage of that if it is TRUE....

I'd like to believe that it's FREE... but I'm getting conflicting information now....

Look at the new Samsung Galaxy S2 user manual (which updated to include WiFi Calling...

Here is a copy/paste from the manual about WiFi Calling.
Wi-Fi CallingWi-Fi Calling is a free feature for T-Mobile customers using this device with the new ISIM card.
Wi-Fi Calling is an excellent solution for coverage issues in and around the home or wherever cellular coverage is limited. Minutes used while connected to the Wi-Fi network count against available rate plan minutes.
The benefits of Wi-Fi Calling include the following:
• Wi-Fi Calling provides a coverage option to improve upon your current in-home coverage experience
• Wi-Fi Calling works anywhere there is an open Wi-Fi signal available
